A. Installing central air conditioning in a home that does not have forced air ducts is no longer difficult – ductless mini-split heat pumps provide a solution. These ductless mini split systems do not require ductwork, are as flexible as room air conditioners, and cool your whole house.  Ductless heat pumps are installed usually by two installers, and for most houses the entire installation takes about a day. Wiring for power and controls is easy because it can be run along with the refrigerant lines. The indoor units are about six to eight inches deep, mounted flush on a wall or ceiling (often where the customer thinks it looks best but in combination with where they will get maximum efficiency), or recessed in the ceiling. A three-inch hole behind the unit is used for several purposes: for wiring, refrigerant lines, control cables, and a condensate drain.

Q. How efficient are ductless air conditioning system?

A. Ductless central air conditioning systems have an outdoor unit that serves several indoor units which each have refrigerant coil and a blower. The refrigerated air goes directly from the outdoor unit through insulated refrigerant lines to individual rooms in the house. Very little energy is lost in the process.
